Bad kitty!!!!! how do i communicate this?

every time i open my back door the cat darts out the door and i have to drop everything and chase her down. i grab her at the top of her neck like a mother cat would (it doesn't hurt her) and i look at her and i say "no. no." and bring her inside. i think she might get the hint but am i doing the right thing? is there something better that i can do to make it clean?
